Historic Visit

This has been a very exciting week around Hummingbird Home. The discovery of the tin sign on the front of the building brought to us a fascinating visitor. Last week we had the privilege of meeting Tina, the great great granddaughter of the owners that purchased the building in the early 1920's. Tina shared the stories with us that have been handed down from generation to generation in her family. We got to tour the building and grounds together and put a location to some of the photos that she had. This picture of her grandmother in the back of the building is definitely one of my favorites. What's in a name?

People often ask me why or how I picked the name Hummingbird Home for our shop. When I envisioned having a storefront one day, I dreamt of a warm and welcoming place that people would enter and get a feeling of home. I wanted friends and strangers alike to feel like they could pull up a chair and share a story or a memory that was sparked by a vintage piece that we had in the store. Sure, I wanted a store filled with pretty things for your home, but it is the feeling of home that I was striving for. The tapestry of an old building.

     I can tell you that this whole project that we have embarked on has some days been exhausting and frustrating with all the delays in building supplies and the search to find contractors that are willing to even work on a 100+ year old building. But, the more layers we pull back, the more I fall in love with our old fixer of a building. The time we have not been open this summer for reasons beyond our control, have actually been a blessing to us as well. We have formed relationships with people in the community and tradesmen that have a love for old buildings as much as we do and I feel even more everyday that...

PROGRESS IN THE CANDLE ROOM

We knew, when we decided to relocate, that we needed a much bigger space to create our candles. We knew we also needed this space to make us feel special.  It is a slow go, but we are finally making forward motion towards our dream coming true.  We cannot wait to share the final product with you, but here is a sneak peak!  Warm woods and black?
